Title: Integrative treatment of complex trauma for adolescents (ITCT-A): clinical practice review
Material Type: Book
Subject: report
Subject: child trauma--therapy--children and young people--complex trauma
Description: The Integrative Treatment of Complex Trauma for Adolescents (ITCT-A) was developed as a model of assessment and treatment for adolescents aged 12-21 who have experienced multiple forms of psychological trauma, coupled with contextual issues of poverty, deprivation, and social discrimination. The model draws upon complex trauma literature, attachment theory, the Self Trauma model, affect regulation skills development and components of cognitive behavioural therapy. The treatment manual outlines that the model can be flexibly applied across a variety of settings (e.g., inpatient, outpatient, schools). This report is a critical review of the ITCT-A model of assessment and treatment for complex trauma. The objective of this review was to document the key elements of this model and explore the feasibility of implementing this in the Western Australia context. The critical review drew on a clinical team delivering services for child abuse and neglect as part of undertaking the review of the model, identifying potential challenges that would come with implementing the model, as well as strengths and limitations of the program’s content in relation to the types of children accessing services from the team. The review identified the need for ITCT-A to be adapted for the Australian context, especially regarding cultural considerations for Aboriginal people. Also recommended were the following: a greater role for developing a therapeutic relationship along with delivering active therapeutic content; further consideration to the challenges of delivering therapy from a large range of possible treatment modalities; and the lack of existing evidence base for the framework.
